Say what, wash my face with oil? You must be nuts!
I heard about using coconut oil as a face cleaner and was super skeptical. The thought of rubbing oil all over my face to remove oil and other gunk seemed counterproductive. I prefer the natural route when possible, and my skin has been a little on the drier side lately, so I decided to give it a try. What could it hurt?
Here’s what I did
Of course, me being me, I had to bang it up a notch. I couldn’t use plain coconut oil and not add anything else. It was time to get crafty and make my own coconut oil face cleaner. I used coconut oil, baking soda, organic sugar, and lemon juice combined in a small container for my homemade coconut oil face cleaner. Check it out:
How to use it
- Before applying the mixture to your face, get enough on your hands to cover your entire face
- Rub the oil around in your hands to get it slightly melted
- Use your hands to rub the mixture into your face for about a minute
- Take a washcloth with warmer water and lay it over your face for at least 30 seconds to open pores and bring out deep down crud
- Just use the cloth to wipe all the gunk away
If you are worried this face cleaner will leave your skin with too much oil, you can follow up with an astringent, like apple cider vinegar or witch hazel. I prefer to add lavender to my witch hazel for more added benefits.
As a side note – during the warmer months it might be a good idea to store this mixture in a cool place. Coconut oil melts at lower temperatures than most other oils.
Results
When I use this coconut oil face cleaner consistently, I notice my skin holds more moisture, seems softer and has less oil build up. I didn’t think it would work, but I am satisfied with the results so far. Who knew cleaning your face with oil would actually pan out?
